Rats are happy when they have access to food, water, and shelter.

Don’t put out the welcome mat. Mow the yard and don’t let the shrubs around your house get out of control. Try to seal up the holes and cracks around the outside of the home. A rat can squeeze into any hole as small as a nickel or any crack less than a half-inch wide. Mice can fit into even smaller openings.

Eliminate water sources. Small sources of standing water, such as condensation from an air-conditioning unit or an over-irrigated lawn, provide enough for rats to live on. Remove any standing water around your home.

Remove the food supply. Rats eat almost anything.  They really like birdseed and your dog or cat's food. Seal up food in plastic or metal containers.  Rats also are attracted to trees that bear nuts, such as pecan trees. Try pruning back these trees or collecting nuts when they appear.
